Olive Oil and Turmeric
A fun recipe to make with kids for Halloween using rice. Turmeric, a plant from the ginger family, has been used for centuries in Asia.🎃
This spice will add a lovely yellow-orange color to these mini pumpkins. I got the idea for this recipe after seeing a photo on the Huiles d’Olive & Olives de France website.

Ingredients
- ½ cup ~ 3.5 oz (100 g) brown basmati rice
- 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
- 5 tablespoons (25 g) parmesan cheese, grated
- 1 garlic clove
- A few black olives
- A few parsley sprigs
- Rinse the rice under cold water.
- Cook it in a saucepan with 2 cups (450 ml) of water and a teaspoon of turmeric for 15 minutes.
- Peel and crush the garlic, then sauté it for a few minutes in a pan with olive oil.
- Once the rice is cooked, drain the cooking water.
- Mix in the garlic, olive oil, and grated Parmesan.
- Let the mixture rest for a few moments.
- When it has cooled slightly, take the rice with a tablespoon and shape a small ball with your hands. Place it on a plate, and repeat until all the rice has been used.
- Slice the black olives to create the eyes and mouth of the pumpkins.
- Finish by adding a small parsley leaf on top of each pumpkin.

Gisou’s Tips and Tricks
- Depending on the rice variety, you may need to cook it for an additional 5 minutes beyond the package instructions. Insufficiently cooked rice will not hold its shape for the pumpkins.
- The rice should be warm and not completely cooled to shape the pumpkins more easily, and also to be able to incorporate the cut olives for the eyes and mouth.
